Decarbonization of existing steam methane reforming-based ammonia plants is possible, and changes in gas and heat flows can be recovered via alternative technologies. Recap our workshop in Atlanta, where we discussed the use of upstream methane monitoring equipment, electrolysers, carbon capture, hydrogen burners, energy storage and electric heating to achieve decarbonization of conventional ammonia plants.

Orica & Origin: decarbonising production at Kooragang Island

Origin Energy has been awarded AUD70 million in funding from the Australian federal government to progress the Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub. The electrolytic hydrogen facility will be located next door to project partner Orica’s existing complex on Kooragang Island in Newcastle, and the bulk of hydrogen produced will be used for ammonia production. Maritime developments: on-water cracking, AiPs and Singapore bunker study releases first results

In maritime ammonia updates this week:

  • In Europe, government funding will support the development of an ammonia cracking system that can be installed on existing LNG vessels (Norway), and the establishment of a floating production and storage facility connected to an offshore wind farm (Netherlands).
  • Two AiPs have been granted: one for Korea’s first ammonia FSRU vessel, the other for a bunkering tanker in Singapore.
  • H2Carrier and Trelleborg will develop a ship-to-ship ammonia transfer system.
  • And GCMD has unveiled the results of their Singaporean ammonia bunker study. All risks identified for conducting pilot projects were found to be low or mitigable, with work towards those pilots to continue.

Flexible ammonia synthesis: shifting the narrative around hydrogen storage

Flexible ammonia production technology is currently scaling up to meet the challenges of fluctuating electricity feedstock. The ability to ramp down plants to 5 - 10% of their nominal load will minimize the requirement for hydrogen storage buffers and reduce the overall cost of renewable ammonia production. The first demonstration-sized flexible ammonia plants are due to begin operations later this year.

Offshore ammonia production in Greenland

H2Carrier and wind project developer Anori will jointly develop Greenland’s first commercial wind farm, which will power the offshore production of ammonia via H2Carrier’s P2XFloater™ vessels. The project could produce as much as 900,000 tonnes of ammonia per year, targeting export markets. H2Carrier also announced that Larsen & Toubro will design & construct the “topside” sections of the P2XFloater™ vessels in India, with the hulls to be built in Asia.
