AM Green: production nears at India’s first renewable ammonia mega-project
AM Green is developing several renewable ammonia projects in India: in Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu), Una (Himachal Pradesh), and Kandla (Gujarat). In 2025, Coal India Limited signed a MoU with AM Green to supply a combined 4,500 MW of wind and solar energy to help power these projects. A 2025 MoU was also signed with the Port of Rotterdam towards the establishment of a renewable molecules corridor between India and North-Western Europe, via Rotterdam.
Zeroing in on its Kakinada project, AM Green reached FID in 2024 for the first million tons of production, entailing significant retrofits at the existing Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited complex. CertifHy has awarded RFNBO pre-certification to phase one of the project. AM Green has selected John Cockerill to provide electrolyzers, supplying a total of 1.3 GW of alkaline electrolyzers for the project over two phases. AM Green has also secured significant offtake agreements for the Kakinada project, including a signed contract with Uniper, and ongoing discussions with Yara and Keppel.
These developments occur in an exciting local context. India is among the world’s largest ammonia producers, representing about 8% of current global production. But, significant quantities of ammonia and urea are also imported to meet demands (some 2.4 million tons of ammonia were imported in 2023 according to S&P Global. India benefits from excellent solar irradiance, making it an ideal location for solar PV deployment. According to IRENA, India has the lowest installed solar PV cost globally, ideal for renewable ammonia production. In fact, India has the potential to transition from a net importer of fossil ammonia to a net exporter of renewable ammonia.
To discuss how AM Green’s renewable ammonia project in Kakinada is progressing (and also to discuss the recent renewable ammonia reverse auctions facilitated by SECI), Shatanshu Agrawal (VP Business Development and Commercial, AM Green), Cyril Vanderheyden (Sr. GM Business Development Europe, AM Green), and Michael Samueli (Director Ammonia-Urea, Chemical Market Analytics) will be joined in conversation by AEA Technology Manager Kevin Rouwenhorst. Join us on Tuesday 24 February @ 9AM EST (7.30PM IST) for a fascinating discussion, and be sure to submit your questions for the speakers when registering.
