AM Green, a dedicated platform of the Greenko Group, is focused on producing renewable hydrogen and converting it into renewable ammonia at scale. AM Green is developing a portfolio of green ammonia plants in India across Kakinada, Tuticorin and Kandla. The first plant of this portfolio (1 million tons per year capacity) is under construction in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, and achieved the critical milestone of Final Investment Decision (FID) in 2024. AM Green has already started construction on this plant, making it one of a select few large-scale, RFNBO-compliant, “green” ammonia plants in construction globally.
AM Green has created a unique architecture for generating renewable energy: pumped hydro power supporting the base load supply of renewable electricity from 2.3 GW of combined wind and solar capacity. Combined with advanced European electrolyser and ammonia synthesis technology, the plants are equipped to produce renewable ammonia sustainably and efficiently.
With this architecture, AM Green is also the first Indian developer to obtain RFNBO pre-certification for its first plant in Kakinada in June 2024. In 2025, an MoU was also signed with the Port of Rotterdam towards the establishment of a renewable molecules corridor between India and North-Western Europe, via Rotterdam. The Kakinada plant has already achieved significant progress including site works, award of all major contracts, key approvals, and is scheduled to start supply of ammonia in 2028. The development is supported by a network of renowned partners including Casale, Air Liquide, Rely (a JV between Technip Energies and John Cockerill), Toyo, Gentari, NTPC Renewables and many others. The project helps secure more than 600 local jobs and is expected to avoid around 2 million tons of CO2 emissions annually once fully operational.
AM Green has also secured significant offtake partnerships for the Kakinada project. In January 2026, it announced the signature of a long-term offtake agreement with Uniper for up to 500,000 tons per year of RFNBO-compliant ammonia starting from 2028 – the first of its kind for an Indian company. The contract is an important milestone in India’s quest of becoming a leading exporter of green hydrogen and green ammonia to the world, and is aligned with India’s Honourable Prime Minister’s vision of National Hydrogen Mission.
To discuss how AM Green’s renewable ammonia project in Kakinada is progressing in the current market environment, Shatanshu Agrawal (VP Business Development and Commercial, AM Green), Cyril Vanderheyden (Sr. GM Business Development Europe, AM Green), Maruthi Ethakota (SVP Project Engineering, AM Green), and Michael Samueli (Director Ammonia-Urea, Chemical Market Analytics) were joined in conversation by AEA Technology Manager Kevin Rouwenhorst.
