With five ammonia plants operating around the country, Pupuk Kaltim is Indonesia’s largest ammonia company. This May, Pupuk announced its first low-carbon project in partnership with Copenhagen Atomics (amongst others): a nuclear-powered, 1 million tonnes per year ammonia production plant in Bontang, Indonesia. The plant will use 1 GW of solid oxide electrolysis capacity to produce electrolytic hydrogen feedstock, powered by 25 modular thorium molten salt reactors developed by Copenhagen Atomics.
To explore the Bontang project, Mulyono (Staff of Senior Vice President Development, Pupuk Kaltim), & Thomas Jam Pedersen (Co-founder, Copenhagen Atomics) were joined in conversation by AEA Technology Manager Kevin Rouwenhorst.
