The Itaipu Dam is the world’s third largest hydroelectric dam, located on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. Paraguay uses only 30% of its share of hydropower from Itaipu, meaning the country has a huge surplus of renewable electricity. Such a surplus could be used for renewable ammonia production via electrolysis-based hydrogen – the concept behind the Villeta Project, currently being developed by ATOME Energy, Casale and URBAS Energy-Ingeser.
To discuss progress to date, the technologies involved and further opportunities in Paraguay, Olivier Mussat (Chief Executive Officer, ATOME), Ermanno Filippi (Chief Technology Officer, Casale) & Santiago Del Valle (Managing Director, URBAS Energy-Ingeser) were be joined in conversation by AEA Technology Manager Kevin Rouwenhorst.
