LEAD: Ammonia Fueled Vessels
With the commercialization of Ammonia-fueled engines in 2024 and 2025, the adoption of ammonia as maritime fuel is taking off. The number of vessels that will operate on ammonia provide clear signals to both ammonia producers and infrastructure providers that ammonia bunkering capacity will be required.
Key insights
- As of September 2024, 96 ammonia-fueled vessels and 167 ammonia-ready vessels have been ordered and announced. Small-scale Supply vessels (tug boats) are the first operational references for ammonia-fueled vessels, entering the water in 2023 and 2024.
- Out of the 51 ordered ammonia-fueled vessels, 20 vessels are ammonia carriers; 25 vessels are bulk carriers. The first of these vessels are expected to hit the waters in 2026 and 2027.
- The first ammonia-ready vessel entered the waters in early 2022. As of September 2024, 24 ammonia-ready vessels are operational.
