ACWA Power brings renewable ammonia to Uzbekistan
By Geofrey Njovu on February 05, 2023
Adding to its existing portfolio of projects in the Central Asian country, ACWA Power and the Uzbek government have agreed to develop a renewable hydrogen facility, feeding a renewable ammonia pilot project in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The renewable hydrogen facility will be integrated with an existing ammonia plant located 45 km from the country’s capital Tashkent, and will generate 3,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year when commissioned in December 2024 (equivalent to about 17,000 tonnes of ammonia). The electrolysis plant will improve the current facility’s service factor and reduce its natural gas dependence.
ACWA and the Uzbek government will also embark on a 500,000-tonne, renewable ammonia feasibility study. Such a facility would have the potential to reduce the country’s CO2 emissions by 1.5 million tonnes annually, with feasibility work to be complete by the end of next year.
The two projects will add to ACWA Power’s growing pipeline in Uzbekistan. The company recently signed a substantial Power Purchase Agreement to support the development of the 1.5 GW Kungrad wind farm. Kungrad will be the largest single-site wind farm in Central Asia and one of the largest in the world when completed in 2027.
We value our collaboration with our long-standing partners, ACWA Power and Uzkimyonosat, and fully support the integration of green hydrogen and its derivatives, which will serve the energy vision of our country.
Jurabek Mirzamahmudov, Uzbekistan Minister of Energy in ACWA Power’s official press release, 19 Jan 2023
We are proud that our giga scale development experience in green hydrogen is making us the preferred choice of partners across the world. As the world continues to grapple with increasing and devastating impact of climate change, the right solutions are the need of the hour. Green hydrogen is considered to be the fuel of the future and we are confident of applying our global expertise in accelerating the development of this vital source of clean energy for Uzbekistan.
