Marking a first in Central Europe, Germany’s BASF has added two grades of renewable ammonia product (pure/dry ammonia and 24.5% aqueous ammonia solution) to its portfolio of commercially available, low carbon footprint products from its monomer division. Renewable molecules can now be produced at BASF’s manufacturing HQ in Ludwigshaven, thanks to a new electrolysis plant coming online.
The news follows the commercial launch of a 54 MW-capacity PEM electrolysis plant for renewable hydrogen production at its Verbund site in Ludwigshaven in March this year. The renewable hydrogen feeds into the renewable ammonia production, reducing the plant’s reliance on fossil-sourced hydrogen feedstock.
The renewable ammonia grades have been certified according to the International Standards & Carbon Certification (ISCC+). A detailed PCF, which includes GHG emissions in the full process from raw material extraction to the renewable ammonia product, is set to be released soon.
For BASF, the addition of the two products to its portfolio is a response to growing demand for renewable ammonia, which is expected to grow further. As the company drives towards its goal of achieving net zero by 2050, the monomer division has developed one circular or low product carbon footprint (PCF) alternative for each major product line.
Our biggest goal is net zero of our products. With our renewable ammonia, we can significantly undercut the product carbon footprint (PCF) of our other low-CO2 ammonia grades.
Our customers, as well as BASF’s own downstream businesses, need low-carbon products already today to explore their market. We are proud to offer the first renewable ammonia produced in Central Europe with a very low PCF.
