Pilot Energy, Samsung C&T: CCS-based ammonia in Western Australia
Korean-based engineering specialists Samsung C&T will join Pilot Energy to develop the Mid West Clean Energy Project in Western Australia. Samsung C&T plans to acquire a 20% stake, will act as EPC contractor for the project, and will “use its best endeavors” to secure an offtake contract to export the produced ammonia from Australia to South Korea.
The Mid West Clean Energy Project aims to produce up to 1.2 million tonnes of CCS-based ammonia per year, starting 2027. Repurposing of the existing infrastructure at the Cliff Head oilfield off the coast of Arrowsmith, WA will allow for offshore carbon sequestration. Pilot Energy also plans for ammonia exports and carbon dioxide imports (for subsequent sequestration) to be based at a jettyless offshore terminal.
Samsung C&T’s participation is an important step as they provide additional technical expertise and financial strength to ensure the successful development of this exciting Western Australian clean energy project. Furthermore, it continues the strong partnership and ongoing trading relations between Australia and Korea.

Hydrogen Canada Corp: CCS-based ammonia in Saskatchewan
Hydrogen Canada Corporation (HCC) & Korean-based E1 have signed an offtake agreement to further the development of a mega-scale, CCS-based hydrogen and ammonia production facility in the Alberta Industrial Heartland near Fort Saskatchewan. Together, the pair will develop an ammonia supply chain between Canada and South Korea (plus other Asian markets). HCC reports that feasibility studies have been completed on a one million tonne-per-year facility, with ammonia to be transported by rail to Canada’s west coast for shipping.
This project represents an opportunity to use cost advantaged, low carbon natural gas in Alberta to support the decarbonization of South Korea and other Asian countries and to provide a level of energy security to those countries as well. Access to cost effective carbon sequestration also creates a material strategic advantage for this project in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. Our partner, E1 Corporation, is a major trader of LPG in Asia, including significant volumes of Canadian LPG and it recognizes the marketability of low cost, reliable energy products sourced from western Canada.
