China Energy, CIMC Raffles Offshore Engineering, and Guoneng Hydrogen Innovation Technology have announced the joint project will progress to commercial trials off the coast of Yantai in northeast China.
The project’s centerpiece is a semi-submersible offshore hydrogen production platform towering over 50 meters in height and weighing more than 20,000 tons. Equipped with photovoltaic power generation systems and electrochemical energy storage devices, the platform achieves energy self-sufficiency. It houses three hydrogen production units, including direct seawater electrolysis and freshwater electrolysis systems, alongside a desalination module capable of producing five tons of freshwater daily for hydrogen generation. The hydrogen produced is converted into methanol and ammonia to address storage and transportation challenges.

The announcement indicates that the target markets for the produced methanol and ammonia are marine fuel and chemical feedstocks. Construction of the platform began in September last year, and received AiP from the China Classification Society in January this year. China Energy led a successful coal co-firing demonstration in February 2022, also in Yantai.
