QatarEnergy: 1.2 million tons of ammonia coupled with CCS and renewable power
Qatar Energy has laid the foundation stone of its new $1.2 billion project in Mesaieed Industrial City, south of the capital Doha on the Persian Gulf coast. thyssenkrupp Uhde was chosen to provide the ammonia synthesis loop in August 2022, and the facility will feature a single-train, 1.2 million tons per year production capacity. This will be coupled with a CO2 liquefaction, injection and sequestration unit (capacity to sequester 1.5 million tons per year), and an adjacent 35 MW solar PV plant. The approaches will combine to lower the carbon intensity of the final product.
In building this facility, we will rely on our own capabilities and expertise in the construction and operation of ammonia plants used for the production of fertilizers. This will be carried out in cooperation between QatarEnergy and Qatar Fertiliser Company – QAFCO. The blue ammonia plant joins a list of QatarEnergy’s large and ambitious expansion projects in Qatar and around the world covering LNG, oil and gas exploration and production, petrochemicals, fertilizers, solar power, and more.

The plant is expected to start producing in mid 2026.
