Hynfra’s Egypt project expands

Million tons per year at full-size, $10 billion total investment
Following discussions with the Egyptian government, Hynfra’s Amun Green Ammonia production project has expanded in scope. To be located in Ras Banas on the Red Sea coast in southeastern Egypt, 2 GW of renewable energy generating capacity will be installed across a 100 km² site. The plant will operate off-grid (without connection to Egypt’s national power grid – a departure in strategy from green project development to date in Egypt), and Hynfra indicates that a dedicated port for ammonia export will also be developed.
The first phase of production entails 400,000 tons each year (from 2031), with the potential to scale up to one million tons in additional phases. The initial investment is estimated at approximately $5 billion, increasing to $10 billion at full production capacity.
Hynfra’s other ammonia projects include:
- Mauritania Green Ammonia: a framework agreement with the Mauritanian Government towards 100,000 tons per year of renewable ammonia supplied by 550 MW of solar and wind energy and 170 MW of electrolyser capacity.
- Jordan Green Ammonia: a combined effort between Polish company Hynfra and Jordan-based Fidelity Group, with a FEED stage partnership now established with Topsoe.
- Development of solid oxide electrolysis process to improve the energy efficiency of ammonia production with three partners.
- In collaboration with Yamna, production of up to 1 million tons per year of renewable ammonia supported by 3GW of renewable energy capacity in Andhra Paresh, India.
