IHI Corporation, state-owned utility PLN Indonesia Power, and state-owned fertilizer company Pupuk have announced the successful completion of an ammonia co-firing trial at the Labuan power plant on Java’s west coast. IHI modified an existing boiler, and a small amount of renewable ammonia was used in an 8 hour trial. IHI reports that it is its second successful ammonia co-firing trial in Indonesia, with a similar trial completed at the Gresik gas turbine power plant (east Java) in 2022. The trial partners have been exploring a full supply chain for ammonia power generation fuel since the 2nd Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) ministerial meeting last year, an event which also saw the launch of Pupuk’s first hybrid renewable ammonia project.

In Japan, IHI’s 100% ammonia-powered gas turbine is edging closer to commercialization. Long-term durability testing is still in progress at IHI’s Aioi facility, where electricity generated by the test turbine has been utilized onsite. In July 2024, IHI reported that N2O and NOX emissions were able to be “suppressed as planned” during turbine operations. Electricity generated by the test turbine will continue to be used onsite in Aioi, with the “decarbonization value” passed onto the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo.
