Torrent Power: renewable ammonia development in India

India-based integrated power utility Torrent Power Limited has signed an MoU with the Gujarat state government to develop a 5 GW solar and wind hybrid plant in Dwarka District. The company has committed to investing Rs 57,000 Crores ($6.9 billion) towards the development of a total of 10 GW of renewable energy capacity in Gujarat by 2030.
Torrent has further made a commitment to develop a 100,000 tons per-year renewable ammonia production plant in Gujarat, supported by an investment of $860 million. The company also plans to develop hydro Pumped Storage Projects (PSP) in several Indian states. It intends to invest between $3 – 4.2 billion) to install 5 – 8 GW of PSP capacity. The MoU builds on a series of agreements made with the Gujarat state government in January this year.

Renewable energy tender, electrolyser subsidies and certification
In other Indian news:
- Hygenco has invited bids for over 1.1 GWs of renewable energy (India’s largest ever) to power its upcoming renewable ammonia project in Odisha. Swiss commodity trader Ameropa has already signed an offtake term sheet for ammonia produced by the project.
- The winners of SECI’s latest round of subsidies for domestic electrolyser manufacturing have been announced, with Adani Enterprises and start-up Newage amongst the winners. A total of 1.5 GW of manufacturing capacity per year will be supported.
- And the Ministry for New and Renewable Energy has launched a draft version of a national certification scheme for renewable hydrogen. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency will oversee the scheme, and producers will be required to comply with a rigorous set of protocols.
