Mizuho & Tsubame: renewable ammonia development partnerships between Japan and Africa
By Geofrey Njovu on September 08, 2025
At the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), Japan-based Mizuho financial group signed MoUs focused on renewable hydrogen development in Africa.
First, Mizuho Bank and Mizuho International signed an MoU with the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme (NGH2P), a Namibian government agency for renewable hydrogen and ammonia development. The parties intend to collaborate on information provision, market research and exchange between Namibian and Japanese companies in relation to renewable energy investments in the South-West African country. NGH2P aims to enable large-scale, low-cost renewable hydrogen development in Namibia by designing a model that maximizes fiscal revenues and regional development in renewable energy investment and renewable ammonia production.
At the same event, Mizuho also signed an MoU with Tsubame BHB, for the development of renewable hydrogen and ammonia projects in Africa. In this partnership, Tsubame BHB intends to utilise Mizuho Bank’s network to promote the commercialisation of its technology, which includes a commercial electride catalyst for low temperature and pressure ammonia synthesis, in Africa. Tsubame also aims to strengthen cooperation with Africa-based strategic and financial institutions. The company’s technology will be deployed in commercial renewable ammonia-based fertiliser projects in Brazil and Laos.
