The 3rd Symposium on Ammonia Energy: Shanghai, Sept 22-26
By Agustin Valera-Medina on July 08, 2024
As well as this introduction to the upcoming 3rd Symposium on Ammonia Energy in Shanghai this September, the Ammonia Energy Association will explore some of the key research presented at the last two Symposium events – Cardiff (2022) and Orleans (2023) – in the coming weeks. Enjoy the deep-dive into ammonia energy R&D, and I look forward to seeing you in Shanghai.

Rising to the challenge
In the past years, a continuous search for novel decarbonizing technologies has shaken the scientific and technological world. Climate change, probably the most concerning problem of humanity in our entire history, has posed a challenge that requires all actors (industry, governments, NGOs, academic institutions and others) to work together. We must consolidate a plan that will serve to support our future in a sustainable manner, whilst also mitigating the detrimental impact towards our environment and biosphere.
As part of the solution, academics worldwide have gathered to start working on vectors that can deploy large energy contents whilst also subsidizing the advancement of zero-carbon technologies with the potential of commercially penetrating our entire society. One of these vectors is ammonia, which is now widely recognized as a real means towards the support of a net zero economy.
A forum to share solutions
However, numerous challenges remain before ammonia can be utilized on a large scale. These challenges include issues related to its production, storage, transportation, utilization, environmental impacts, and safety. Continuous innovation and advancements are essential to ensure its effective integration into future sustainable energy systems. As progress is made globally, the Symposium on Ammonia Energy (SoAE) serves as an international platform for presenting and discussing the latest scientific and engineering developments in the field of ammonia energy.
Comprehensive work on ammonia as an energy vector currently takes place at various institutions worldwide. The topic has spurred various national and international collaborations, hence attracting the attention of the scientific community. Different from other fora, the Symposium on Ammonia Energy brings together academics and technologists interested in sharing their advancements and developments for the use of ammonia as an energy vector.
The Symposium event
Industrial participation is promoted through a Workshop that precedes the main symposium. This “Academia plus Industry (A+I)” workshop emphasizes current collaborative projects that seek to deliver high TRL outputs in support of industrial requirements. Plenary lectures on the topics of large ammonia deployment and integration are combined with keynote and invited presentations that reveal the work on fronts such as ammonia production, internal combustion engines, gas turbines and heat/thermal processes for support to national and international companies.
Similarly, the main event comprises sessions on the topics of materials, production, catalysis, fundamental combustion, reaction mechanisms, environment, techno-economics, fuel cells, internal combustion engines, gas turbines, thermal systems, and Health and Safety. The three day symposium will allow presenters to share in either oral or poster presentations their most advanced works, hence incrementing dissemination and establishing a strong platform for collaboration between institutions at international levels to progress on the development of an ammonia energy-based future.
The event intends to receive contributions from scientists at all levels of their careers, from students to consolidated researchers, ensuring large dissemination of all types of research and development.
Shanghai, September 22-26
Following the successful 1st and 2nd SoAE events held at Cardiff University (UK) and the University of Orléans (France), the Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (45th World Ranked, QS) and Foshan Xianhu Laboratory will take over the baton and host the 3rd SoAE in Shanghai, China. The theme of this symposium is “Ammonia: New Energy, New Opportunity”. We will share the latest research results, discuss innovative technology solutions, and engage in dialogue on sustainable development strategies for ammonia energy, jointly promote the ammonia energy research, address related challenges, and achieve a cleaner and more sustainable future energy landscape.
With a strong Scientific Committee (led by Prof. Agustin Valera-Medina, with 70 of the most renowned scientists working on ammonia), 5 unique plenary lectures (delivered by Prof. Hideo Hosono, Prof. Hideaki Kobayashi, Prof. Christine Rousselle, Prof. Junwang Tang, and Prof. Shanwen Tao), presentation and research awards, and an entire army of researchers organized by Prof. Yuyang Li (main organizing leader), the event promises to become the flagship of the ammonia energy academic branch. More details can be found on the event website, and we look forward to seeing you in Shanghai.
