Trafigura has signed a contract for four medium-sized gas carriers (MGC), featuring WinGD dual fuel ammonia engines. The vessels will be built at HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, South Korea, and the first ship will be delivered in 2028. According to Hyundai Mipo, the 190m long vessels will all feature four 45,000 m3 cargo tanks, capable of carrying liquefied gas cargoes including LPG, ammonia, and vinyl chloride. SCR will be applied to the engine exhausts to minimise NOX emissions, and various systems (including Alfa Laval’s fuel supply and release mitigation system) will ensure crew safety in the event of ammonia fuel leaks.
We are excited to embark together with HD Hyundai Mipo on this ambitious project which supports our commitments to decarbonising shipping and will help us to develop the global low-carbon ammonia bunkering infrastructure needed for zero-carbon shipping to become a reality.

In March, Lloyd’s Register (LR) confirmed that it had approved the MGC design. This is part of an ongoing joint development project studying the performance of ammonia as a shipping fuel, started in December 2024 and which will continue until the new vessels are delivered. As well as LR, Trafigura, and vessel constructor Hyundai Mipo, WinGD, Liquid Gas Equipment Limited (Babcock LGE), Alfa Laval, and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore are part of the project.
We are proud to have played a pivotal role in this collaborative project. It demonstrates our commitment to supporting the maritime industry’s energy transition efforts by offering exceptional technical expertise, rigorous safety evaluations, and regulatory leadership. As a trusted maritime services partner, we continue to pioneer the pathway enabling the adoption of alternative fuels and innovative technologies that shape the future of decarbonised shipping.
