500,000 tons per year from Kakinada project
Uniper and AM Green have announced the signing of a long-term binding offtake agreement for renewable ammonia produced at AM Green’s under-development facility in Kakinada, on India’s east coast. 500,000 tons per year of RFNBO-certified ammonia will be shipped to Europe as early as 2028. Offtake discussions with Yara (term sheet signed in May 2024) and Keppel are ongoing.
This partnership is a milestone for India’s role in the global energy transition. AM Green’s renewable ammonia is designed to meet stringent European RFNBO compliance standards. This is achieved through our unique firm and dispatchable clean electricity solutions. It is enabling multiple downstream sectors including ammonia, aluminum, chemicals, and other energy-intensive industries lower their emissions significantly for India and now for the World.
Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty, Founder, Greenko Group and AM Green in Uniper’s official press release, 12 Jan 2026
This agreement with AM Green Ammonia is a key building block in our strategy to provide our customers with reliable access to renewable and low carbon molecules at scale. Green ammonia stands out as one of the most promising solutions to decarbonize CO2– intensive production of chemicals, fertilizers and, through green hydrogen, also in refining. Importantly, it offers among the lowest CO2 avoidance costs compared to other renewable and low carbon molecules – thanks to its mature production process and the absence of carbon feedstock requirements. With clear, stable and credible rules – and with procurement and demand‑side measures such as clear quotas for renewable molecules that reward verified CO₂‑abatement performance – we can accelerate the decarbonization while safeguarding competitiveness. We are proud to help establish one of the first large-scale supply corridors between India and Europe.

In the works since 2023
The agreement has been in the works since 2023, when it was announced Uniper would have exclusive offtake rights to phase one of the Kakinada project. The pair have ended up negotiating a “first of its kind innovative pricing, supply and tenure structure for a supply and purchase agreement”, which will help establish the first India-Europe ammonia export supply chain.
