H2Carrier: integrated wind energy & offshore ammonia production in Norway
By Geofrey Njovu on May 16, 2024
H2Carrier has submitted project proposals for the development of two onshore wind farms in Finnmark county to the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE). The two wind farms, Oksefjorden and Rubbedalshøgda, will be located in far northern Norway, above the Arctic Circle.
With a combined capacity of 1.55 GW , the farms are projected to power the production of 109,000 and 610,000 tons of renewable hydrogen and ammonia, respectively. The hydrogen and ammonia would be produced offshore, using H2Carrier’s floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) system installed on a ship moored proximally to the shore.
FPSO is widely used in the traditional oil & gas industry, but H2Carrier is an early mover in adopting the system for ammonia production. H2Carrier’s FPSO design, the P2X Floater, dedicated to renewable hydrogen and ammonia production, received Approval in Principle from DNV. The design features an offshore floating production system fitted with PEM electrolysers and Haber Bosch equipment.
In 2023, H2Carrier reached an agreement with developer Anori for the supply of the PTX Floater technology, to be deployed in Anori’s integrated wind farm and ammonia production project in Greenland.
The application is a response to NVE’s call for project proposals, as Norway pushes to meet its emissions reduction goals. NVE will now assess the applications (including hearings and impact assessments), before granting rights for the development of the wind farm projects.
We are pleased to present plans for two large green energy projects in Finnmark which allows us to leverage technologies and processes developed from Norway’s offshore oil & gas activities. It is important to us that the projects have been developed and designed in a close co-operation with the host municipalities. The limited grid capacity in Finnmark represents a bottle neck for development of new renewable power. By establishing new green industries on a floating production vessel adjacent to the wind farm, we are no longer dependent on an expansion of the national grid.
