Following a long-term time charter agreement with Navigator Amon Shipping, ammonia distribution giant Yara Clean Ammonia will add two 51,000 m3 capacity, dual-fuel medium gas carriers (MGCs) to its fleet. Navigator Amon Shipping, an 80:20 joint venture between Navigator Gas and Amon Maritime, has already signed a contract with Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering to construct these vessels, which are scheduled for delivery between June and October 2028.
Compliant with tightening environmental regulations, the new vessels, which will also be equipped with ice-class notation, will future-proof Yara’s ammonia shipping capabilities. The two MGCs will “reduce freight costs per tonne, strengthen margins, and enhance operational flexibility.” Yara also reached a time-charter agreement with NYK Group in March 2025 for an ammonia-fueled, 40,000 m3 MGC, set to be delivered for service in November 2026.
Building scalable, reliable supply chains is critical to unlocking the hydrogen economy. This contract is a logistical and cost-efficient way to move large volumes of ammonia to Europe, reducing operational bottlenecks and delivering economies of scale.

Navigator is actively expanding its work with Yara Clean Ammonia with the addition of two high-spec ammonia carriers, at a time when global demand for low carbon commodities is accelerating. Together, we are building the core infrastructure needed to facilitate the uptake of clean energy using technology that will enable compliance with present and future environmental regulations.

Construction underway for Yara’s renewable ammonia powered container ship
This month, Yara Clean Ammonia also commemorated the steel cutting ceremony to mark the official start of construction of Yara Eyde, a renewable ammonia-powered container ship.
The vessel will operate on the Oslo–Porsgrunn–Bremerhaven–Rotterdam route, connecting industrial clusters such as Yara’s Herøya renewable fertiliser plant to markets in Europe. The project was initially announced in 2023, at which point the parties agreed to form a joint venture to operate the vessel. The 2023 announcement also indicated that the vessel would become operational in 2026, but specific details may have changed. The vessel is being developed by a group comprising Yara Clean Ammonia, Yara International, CMB.TECH and North Sea Container Line.
This is more than the start of a ship – it is the start of a new chapter in maritime decarbonization. Yara Eyde embodies our ambition to make low-emission ammonia a reality for shipping and to inspire the industry toward solutions that reduce emissions.
